How to Install a Surface-mounted Cabinet

1. Locate wall studs and mark them clearly on the wall surface. Draw a level line at the desired top height of the cabinet body, then measure and mark a second line to indicate the bottom of the cabinet.
2. Attach a temporary ledger board (usually 1 × 4) just below the lower level line, using duplex nails. Nail holes can be patched with wallboard compound after the cabinet installation is completed.
3. Rest the base of the cabinet on the ledger, and hold it in place, or brace it with 2 × 4s. Attach the cabinet to the wall at stud locations by drilling pilot holes and driving wood screws. Remove ledger when finished.
